Tocumwal Line
The Tocumwal Line branches off the main North Eastern Line at Mangalore. The line once provided an alternative route to Sydney rather than via Albury with a break of guage at Tocumwal. However the SG track beyond Tocumwal has now been abandonned.
V/Line ran passenger trains along this line until 1993 serving a short branch to Cobram. This was one of many services to be closed under the Kennett Government however the service as far as Shepparton was retained and operated by a private operator called Hoys.
Although the tracks between Strathmerton and Tocumwal were abandonned in the early 1990s they were revived in 1995 when Tocumwal was developed as an inland port.
Today the line still retains a heavy freight presence over the BG track to Tocumwal, however passenger trains still continue only as far as Shepparton after a study found that the restoration of services to Cobram was not financially viable. The track is to be converted to SG and there is a possibility in the long term that the SG section in NSW beyond Tocumwal will be restored as part of an inland rail route to Queensland.
