Sandringham Line
The Sandringham Line is a suburban passenger line with electrified services that stop all stations to Flinders Street. Few services run via the city loop due to the need to cross other tracks to reach the tunnel portal and all services run through to the terminus at Sandringham. Passenger services are quite frequent on the Sandringham Line compared to other routes which results in relatively high patronage. The Sandringham Line contains the only remaining set of hand operated railway gates in the electrified area at the New Street level crossing.
The line was originally opened as an extension of the St Kilda railway with a connection between St Kilda and Windsor. This connection however was short lived in favour of the current more direct route via South Yarra and Prahran.
