Flemington Racecourse Line

The Flemington Racecourse Line is a short branch line located off the main broad gauge line to Wodonga. The line was one of the first to be electified and today is the only electrified rail line in the metropolitan network that does not have regular passenger services.

Today the line is used for passenger services to meets at Flemington Racecourse and to events held at the Showgrounds. The line is also used for the stabling of electric train services. This was not always the case however, with hand operated gates remaining at the Ascot Vale Road level crossing until the late 1990s. This made the line expensive to operate and towards the end of the period when the hand operated gates remained the line was only used for Royal Melbourne Show services and for major race meets.

There were once also an extensive number of sidings located along the line which served nearby stockyards.
